Community service is in our blood.

The Grant Application Process

The Coastal Blood Foundation awards grants only to U.S. 501(c)(3) organizations and other tax-exempt organizations.

STEP 1: Know what we fund.

The first step in the grant application process is learning if grant support from the Coastal Blood Foundation is available for your project. Carefully read the What We Support page.

STEP 2: Submit a Letter of Inquiry

The next step is to submit a brief letter of inquiry outlining your idea and inquiring about the possibility of funding. Visit our letters of inquiry page for guidelines on composing and submitting a letter.

STEP 3: Submit a Grant Proposal

The Coastal Blood Foundation does not accept unsolicited grant proposals. Grant seekers interested in obtaining funding from the Foundation are strongly encouraged to first submit a letter of inquiry, as described above. Those submitting promising letters of inquiry will be contacted by the Foundation and invited to submit a formal grant proposal, including referral to partner organizations responsible for in-depth evaluation of medical, scientific and administrative proposals. A grant application and guidelines may be provided at this time.

Once a formal grant proposal has been submitted, the Foundation’s partner(s) and the Coastal Blood Foundation will evaluate the proposal and reach a decision about whether it meets the Foundation’s standards and advances current Foundation priorities. Depending on the funds requested and the complexity of the work to be performed, the Foundation may seek outside review of the proposal. Certain grants, funded by the Foundation but completely administered, vetted and refereed by a partner organization, may be offered solely on a competitive basis.

Direct Solicitation — In some cases, we may invite one or more organizations to discuss an appropriate concept with us and explore their interest and their capacity to undertake the work. If the organization has the expertise, capacity and interest, we will invite them to submit a concept memo or proposal. When we know that an organization is well suited to perform the work, we may directly solicit an early phase concept memo or proposal.

RFPs — From time-to-time, the Foundation may distribute a Request for Proposals. Public RFPs are posted on our website. Private RFPs may be directed to specific organizations.
